How this works

Formula

percent = (part / whole) × 100

A percentage expresses a number as a fraction of 100. "20%" means 20 out of every 100, or 0.20 in decimal form.

To find a percentage of a number, convert the percent to a decimal (divide by 100) and multiply. For example, 20% of 150 = 0.20 × 150 = 30.

Percentage change compares how much a value grew or shrank relative to its starting point: (new − old) ÷ |old| × 100. A positive result is an increase; a negative is a decrease.

Worked example

What is 20% of 150?

Value A (percent)20
Value B (number)150
ModeWhat is X% of Y?

Result

20% of 150 is 30. Convert 20% to 0.20, then multiply by 150.
