How this works

Formula

a/b ± c/d = (ad ± bc) / bd · (a/b)×(c/d) = ac/bd · (a/b)÷(c/d) = ad/bc

A fraction represents a part of a whole. The top number is the numerator (how many parts you have) and the bottom is the denominator (how many parts make up the whole).

To add or subtract fractions, first find a common denominator — usually the product of the two denominators. Then adjust the numerators and combine.

Multiplying fractions is straightforward: multiply the numerators together and the denominators together. To divide, flip the second fraction upside down and multiply.

Always simplify your final answer by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD).

Worked example

3/4 + 2/5

Fraction A3/4
OperationAdd
Fraction B2/5

Result

Common denominator 20. 3×5 + 2×4 = 15 + 8 = 23. Result: 23/20, which is already in simplest form.
