Imperial: fuel = distance ÷ MPG · Metric: fuel = distance × (L/100km ÷ 100)
Fuel consumption calculators help you budget for trips and compare vehicles. In the US, fuel efficiency is measured in miles per gallon (MPG) — higher is better. In most other countries, it is measured in liters per 100 kilometers (L/100km) — lower is better.
To calculate fuel used with MPG, divide the trip distance by your vehicle's MPG rating. With L/100km, multiply the distance by the efficiency rating and divide by 100. Then multiply the fuel used by the price per gallon or liter to get the total cost.
Real-world fuel consumption varies with driving conditions — city driving uses more fuel than highway driving, and aggressive acceleration, heavy loads, and air conditioning all reduce efficiency. Use this calculator as an estimate and adjust based on your typical driving.
Worked example
150-mile trip, 30 MPG, $3.50/gal (imperial)
Result
Fuel used = 150 ÷ 30 = 5 gallons. Cost = 5 × $3.50 = $17.50. Cost per mile = $0.12.
