Wallpaper Calculator

Calculate how many rolls of wallpaper you need for any wall.

Inputs

ft

The combined length of all walls you plan to wallpaper.

ft
in

Standard wallpaper rolls are typically 21 inches wide in the US or 53 cm in Europe.

ft

A standard single roll contains about 33 feet of wallpaper.

in

The vertical distance before a pattern repeats. Use 0 for solid colors or random patterns.

Doors and windows. Each opening reduces the wallpaper needed by about 12 sq ft.

How this works

Formula

Rolls = ceil(ceil(wall length ÷ roll width) ÷ floor(roll length ÷ (height + pattern repeat)))

Wallpaper is sold in rolls, and calculating how many you need depends on your wall dimensions, the roll size, and whether the wallpaper has a repeating pattern that must be matched between strips.

First, figure out how many vertical strips you need by dividing the total wall length by the roll width. Then determine how many full strips you can cut from a single roll by dividing the roll length by the strip length (wall height plus any pattern repeat).

Pattern repeat matters because each strip must start at the same point in the pattern to align with adjacent strips. A larger pattern repeat means more wasted paper per strip and fewer usable strips per roll. Solid colors and random patterns have zero repeat, so you get maximum efficiency.

Worked example

40 ft of walls, 8 ft height, 21 in roll width, 33 ft roll length, no pattern repeat

Wall length40 ft
Wall height8 ft
Roll width21 in
Roll length33 ft
Pattern repeat0 in

Result

Roll width = 1.75 ft. 40 ÷ 1.75 = 23 strips. Each roll gives floor(33 ÷ 8) = 4 strips. 23 ÷ 4 = 5.75 → 6 rolls needed.
